Q. What kind of credit card -- if any -- am I eligible for with a credit score under 600?
A. You'll probably need a secured credit card. You'll have to give a credit card company an amount of money -- say, $300 -- and that will be your credit limit.
You can charge up to that amount, pay your monthly balance off in full or carry part of the balance over to the next month, just as with a regular card.
We suggest that you charge only what you can afford to pay back the next month. Prompt, in-full payments will help you rebuild your credit score. Once you have established a good payment record, the bank may increase your credit limit and, in time, you'll be able to get a credit card that doesn't require a security deposit.
